English 80: Final Project Presentation Guidelines
For your final this semester, you will make a presentation to the class about your chosen topic for E3. The presentation should seek to persuade your audience to care about and take actions to help fix the problem you identified.
Your Presentation Should Accomplish the Following:
  • Emphasize the seriousness of the problem that you have chosen by explaining its effects
  • Include research to back up your assertions
  • Propose solutions that the individuals in your audience could implement
  • Explain to the audience how the solutions will help solve the problem and are likely to work
  • Explain to the audience why your proposed solutions are easy to accomplish
  • Address a general audience who may not know as much as our class does about the issue you are discussing
Requirements:
  • Your presentation must be 5-10 minutes in length (you will be cut off if your presentation goes over the allotted time and will lose points if your presentation is not long enough)
  • Your presentation may take the form of: a PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides or similar visual presentation; a three-column pamphlet (there are many free Word or Google Doc templates out there to help you create a professional looking pamphlet); or a video project (similar to Annie Leonard or Anna Lappe’s short informative/persuasive videos)
  • Presentations should be academically sound, proof read, and appropriate to a general American audience
Optional:
For this final presentation, you may work in a group of no more than three partners (NO EXCEPTIONS FOR LARGER GROUPS) or you may complete the project individually. If you work with a group, you will choose only 1 group member’s E3 topic to present.
If you choose to work with a group, you will need to complete some additional requirements:
  • All participants in the group must be present on the day of the presentation to receive credit (No show=no grade)
  • All participants in the group must speak during the presentation (No speak = no grade)
  • Group members will need to complete a self and partner evaluation (25% of the possible points will be deducted if you do not complete the self and partner evaluation)
  • Group members will need to provide a breakdown of how each member contributed to finishing the project (no participation = no grade…NO FREELOADING!)
Due Dates:
Presentations will occur on Wednesday 12/7 and Friday 12/9 during our finals time. Presenters will be called randomly, so being present and ready to go either day is important.
  • You will receive points on your final presentation for being a good audience member, which means you must be present and attentive for all presentations (No cell phone use, working on other classwork, late arrivals, early departures or absences during presentations!)

English 80: Essay 3 Guidelines
Prompt:
American style consumerism is based on perpetual growth. But as Annie Leonard has indicated, you cannot keep growing indefinitely when resources are fixed, so we will eventually hit a wall at which point our economy and environment will be beyond repair. This consumerism has impacted all facets of life both within the US and the world at large. Some of the impacts discussed in the readings we have encountered this semester include: abuse of the environment, workers, and animals; manipulation of consumers by branding and marketing; a food system skewed toward ever more unhealthy and cheap options; industrialized farming; commodification of food and other resources; increased pollution and waste; growing corporate power and deregulation, just to name a few.
For E3, you will write an essay that:
  1. Identifies one problem created by American-style consumerism and explains how consumerism is the reason for the problem
    1. This problem can be one we already discussed/read about in class; or could be a new problem introduced by “The Effects of Consumerism” or any of the films we watched this semester; or it could be another problem caused by consumerism about which you are passionate
  2. Highlights the negative effects caused by the problem
  3. Suggests ways that the flaws could be fixed or improved upon (based on the research you have done)
Requirements:
-Your essay must be a minimum of 4 pages in length (not including the Works Cited page)
-Your essay must be in MLA format
-Your essay must contain a Works Cited page (not included in the minimum page count)
-Your essay must make use of at least 5 sources. Two of the five sources must be researched independently by you through MVC’s library database. The other three sources can come from any of our course readings or films or be new sources that you researched yourself. (You may include more than 5 sources if you wish, but you still need at least 2 new sources in your essay.)
-Your essay must contain a minimum of 4 direct quotations (You must use at least three different quote integration methods in your essay.)
-Your essay must also make use of paraphrase with appropriate in-text citations.
-Your essay must use research to back up your suggested solutions.
Due Dates:
Friday 12/2: (I will check these during class to ensure that your topic choice is appropriate and your two additional sources are scholarly and appropriate.)
  • Annotated Bibliography with entries for all 5 sources.
  • Introduction and first body paragraph of E3 (bring 3 copies).
Monday 12/5: E3 Complete Draft (bring 3 copies) and PEE Charts
Monday 12/12: Final Draft of E3 Due by 2pm (Must be time stamped and delivered to me through campus mail in the Office of Instruction, SAS 319). NO EMAILED SUBMISSIONS!
